We are passionate about helping you maintain healthy and happy feet. As April rolls around, we are  celebrating  Foot Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to highlighting the importance of foot care.

Did you know that about 20 percent of Americans encounter foot problems each year? Many of these issues stem from underlying health conditions such as obesity, diabetes, or peripheral neuropathy. That's why it's crucial to pay attention to your feet and take proactive steps to keep them in top condition.

One of the simplest yet most effective ways to care for your feet is through regular self-examination. Take a few moments each day to inspect your feet, using a mirror if needed, to check for any signs of trouble such as cracks, peeling, injuries, or dry skin. This step is especially vital for individuals with diabetes, as it can help prevent non-healing wounds.

When out and about in public areas, make sure to wear appropriate footwear to protect your feet from scratches, cuts, and potential infections like athlete’s foot or plantar warts. And don't forget to replace your exercise shoes regularly – every six months or after reaching 300 to 400 miles – to avoid discomfort and foot pain caused by worn-out support.

Stretching is another essential component of foot health. Incorporate daily stretching routines for your ankles, lower legs, and feet to reduce the risk of injury, especially before engaging in physical activities.

After bathing, take the time to thoroughly dry your feet and the spaces between your toes. This simple practice can help reduce the risk of fungal infections. Follow up with a moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated and healthy.

While a fresh coat of nail polish can add a pop of color to your toes, leaving it on for too long can lead to fungal toenails. Be sure to give your nails a break from polish from time to time.

And speaking of protection, don't forget to apply sunscreen to your ankles and between your toes to prevent sunburn and reduce the risk of skin cancer.

Your shoe size may change over time, so it's essential to have your feet measured regularly to ensure a proper fit. Maintaining a healthy weight is also crucial, as excess weight can put pressure on your feet and lead to various issues such as heel or foot pain, circulatory problems, arthritis, and stress fractures.

When it comes to footwear, opt for shoes that offer good support and a low heel. Custom orthotics can also provide the proper arch support your feet need for optimal comfort and health.

Finally, if you experience any foot, ankle, or toe injuries, don't try to treat them yourself. Schedule a visit with us at Roadrunner Foot and Ankle for professional care and personalized treatment options.
