Happy New Year!  We hope you enjoyed your holidays with family and friends.  As we move into 2020 we would like you to think about your feet.  With all of the shopping and even holiday parties that you attended; your feet might have been last on your list to pay attention to.  One of your resolutions might be to start an exercise program.   We want to remind you the importance of keeping your feet healthy in this new year.  Here are some tips to keep in mind and to make sure to avoid any injury.

Take your time and ease into  new exercise plans:  If you want to start increasing your activity in 2020, ease into an exercise routine.  If you do increase your activity, remember that too much too soon could impact not only your body but your feet as well.  The last thing you would want when starting an exercise program is to have an injury.

Find and wear proper footwear:  Whether you take up walking, hiking, playing a sport or just going to the gym, you need to make sure you find the proper shoes for the activity.  Shoes should be comfortable and provide the right amount of support for your feet.  By wearing the right type of shoes, you can prevent injuries from happening.  Things to consider is arch support, size and what type of insole is in the shoe.

Take care of your feet:  This is key when starting any type of activity.  Making sure you are taking care of your toenails and even moisturizing your feet can help in preventing ingrown toenails or even calluses.  In order to keep up with your resolution, you might want to consider stretching and even massaging your feet not only to provide relief but to keep them healthy and prevent injury.

Listen to your feet:  Make sure to listen to your feet.  If you start noticing pain or discomfort and it still is persistent after resting and taking time off from your activity, do not push through.  The last thing you would want is to cause any type of injury to your feet.

Wishing you a very Happy New Year and here is to happy, healthy feet.  Always remember, if you or someone you know have any type of foot problems, consider making an appointment with Dr. Margaret Withrow or Dr. Gary N. Friedlander at Roadrunner Foot and Ankle in Peoria, Arizona.  We want to make sure you keep with your resolutions for the New Year.
