Shoe shopping – finding the right pair that fit your feet might be the hardest thing to do.  We all wish that we could be Cinderella and find the perfect fitting glass slipper.  We want to offer you tips on finding the perfect shoe for you.

SHOP AT A STORE WHERE YOU CAN GET SIZED

Online shopping has taken off in the last few years, and shopping for a pair of shoes might be hard to do.  You can’t rely on your measurements from a few years ago and hope that you order the right sized shoe.  Finding a store that is not only specialized with the types of shoes they sell, but the staff at these types of stores usually have training on shoe sizes and fit.  These sales associates not only can help you with your sizing but also recommend the type of shoe that will fit your feet.

SHOES MUST FIT TO THE FOOT – NOT TOO TIGHT OR LOOSE

One of the misconceptions that people have when shopping for shoes, is to buy the shoes a little too tight in hoping that they will stretch during time.  Your shoes fit comfortable with at least a half an inch of space between your longest toe and the front of the shoe.  Your toes should be able to wiggle your toes with this much space.   If your foot is cramped inside a shoe, it could pose problems not only for your feet, but also leg and back pain.  Additionally, take the right pair of socks or hosiery with you to try on with your shoes, especially when buying athletic shoes.  The thickness of the sock will have an impact on the fit of the shoe.

TRY AND WALK AROUND BEFORE YOU BUY

Make sure to try on both shoes before you purchase them.  Did you know that the majority of Americans have one foot larger then the other?  Buying the shoe for the larger foot is important.  While walking around the store, pay attention to how the shoe feels – is it too tight or too loose, is there any rubbing or discomfort while standing or walking.  If the shoes are uncomfortable in the store, there might not be a “breaking in” period whether it’s one month of two months.

SHOP LATER IN THE DAY

Feet tend to swell up as the day goes on and shopping at the end of the day is the ideal time to try on shoes.  Shopping in the late afternoon or evening is the best time to get the most accurate fit.

ASK A PODIATRIST FOR RECOMMENDATIONS

If you are having any type of foot pain and have changed your shoes and found no relief, consider making an appointment with Dr. Margaret Withrow or Dr. Dylan Kaumaya at Roadrunner Foot and Ankle in Peoria, Arizona.  We want to help you get relief and get you back on your feet again.
