The start of summer – a time for barbecues, swimming parties and vacations – and a time not to forget about your feet and overall foot health.  Summer is a time where you might be more active than usual,  and this can be tough on your feet.  Here are some summer foot care tips to keep your feet healthy, happy, and safe:

  • Wear proper footwear – choose footwear that is breathable and provides support to your feet, such as sandals and shoes of natural material.  When comes to flip flops, these are not a supportive shoe and can cause problems – such as painful arches, foot pain and even sprained ankles.  Wear flip flops in moderation, such as the pool or even if you are working at home.  Also, try to avoid wearing high heels or tight-fitting shoes as they can cause blisters and other foot problems.
  • Keep your feet clean and dry – wash your feet daily and dry them thoroughly afterward.  Any excess moisture on your feet can lead to fungal infections, like athlete’s foot, so make sure to keep your feet dry.
  • Use sunscreen – Apply sunscreen to your feet before heading out in the sun. This can help to prevent sunburn and reduce skin cancer.
  • Stay hydrated – Drinking enough water is important for overall health, including the health of your feet.  Proper hydration can help prevent cracked heels and other dry skin issues.
  • Take breaks – if you’re doing a lot of walking or standing, take breaks to rest your feet.  This can help prevent fatigue and reduce the risk of injury.
  • Stretch and exercise your feet – Regular stretching and exercise can help improve feet flexibility and reduce the risk of injury.  Try exercises like toe curls, calf raises and ankle circles.
  • Treat foot problems promptly – If you notice any foot problems like blisters, calluses or pain, treat them promptly to prevent them from getting worse.  This is especially true if you have diabetes, and we recommend that you call our office immediately for an appointment.
